Damon System

A smile is more than just straight teeth.

Here at Invisible Orthodontics we don’t just promote one type of brace system, we are keen to help you identify the right solution for your particular needs and budget.

One of the popular systems which can be used in certain circumstance is Damon Braces, but what exactly are they and how do they work? Let’s take a closer look.

The American Damon Philosophy leans to avoiding the extraction of teeth and makes use of wider arch wires and self-ligating brackets with very low friction to create space for crowding. This results in a beautiful wide smile arch from the corners of the mouth with narrow/small buccal corridors (the spaces between the cheeks and the teeth) as shown below:

Damon braces are self-ligating which means that whilst they are placed much like conventional braces, we do not need to tighten and adjust them regularly. Instead, Damon uses a slider mechanism which adjusts automatically as the teeth are straightened. This makes them more convenient, potentially more comfortable and also more user-friendly in many cases. Treatment time can also be shorter for many people.

Damon uses a “memory wire” and slide brackets which apply less pressure than traditional elastic braces. These components tighten over time, moving your teeth gradually into the desired positions.

As with all types of braces, there are some pros and cons to understand as follows:

Advantages with Damon braces:

  • Very efficient and produces a wider, natural smile
  • Used for over 2 million cases with excellent success rates
  • Has a huge positive impact on the patient’s overall facial profile – truly “face driven” orthodontics
  • Reduces the dark bucall corridors at the corners of the mouth
  • Uses the principle of low-friction and low-force for better comfort
  • Delivers a predictable outcome
  • Clear bracket construction helps discreet wearing

Disadvantages with Damon braces:

No braces are perfect and Damon also has a few disadvantages to consider. However, most of these are also similar for most types of brace systems.

  • Standard Damon braces still use wires and brackets which are visible. However there is a version known as Damon Clear which minimises this and renders the system near-invisible
  • Can be irritating to wear for several days until you get used to them. However, this can also be said for most types of braces
  • Can be more expensive than traditional braces; however the cost will vary depending on the type of treatment required.
