Social Six Teeth Straightening

“Speedy” Braces.

There are a number of orthodontic techniques which focus solely on the upper and lower teeth right at the front of the mouth known as the “Social Six”. These teeth are single-rooted and hence can be moved more easily than teeth elsewhere in the mouth. This means that relatively fast orthodontic correction can be achieved where only the social six teeth are involved and where misalignment is relatively minor. This can be a quick and effective solution in some cases.

There are several types of braces systems which concentrate on this less-complex type of teeth straightening, including Cfast, Fast Braces, STb and more.

As with all types of braces systems, there are pro and cons, some of the main ones are as follows:

Disadvantages of braces focused on ‘social six’ straightening:

  • More visible than clear aligners
  • Cannot be used for more extensive adjustments, e.g. with the back teeth
  • More difficult to clean the clear aligners – the braces are typically fixed in place
  • This technique often involves IPR (interproximal stripping of the teeth (enamel reducing) to create space to align the teeth and is only recommended in very mild crowded malocclusions

Advantages of braces focused on ‘social six’ straightening:

  • Fast acting where misalignment is relatively minor
  • Although using wires and brackets, most types are manufactured using transparent, delicate materials for discreet wearing
  • Can be more affordable than other methods due to reduced wearing time

There is clearly a place for fast, ‘social six’ teeth straightening and where appropriate our team will recommend a treatment to suit. However, it should be noted that all of the same results can be achieved in the same way and in similar time using conventional orthodontics applied appropriately by our high qualified team.

Next Steps

In many ways we believe that comprehensive, conventional orthodontics is the more favourable approach as we focus on a “full mouth” solution rather than simply considering the teeth at the front of the mouth. We also avoid stripping the tooth enamel to make way for alignment, a feature of many of the “speedy” brace solutions.

As with all orthodontic treatments we will carry out a comprehensive initials consultation to determine exactly which type of treatment will be most suitable for your particular requirement.
